Cave of the Winds
Up close and personal : A windy, wet, wild experience!
Cave of the Winds was best attraction on the American side. Being at the base of the falls is definitely awesome - wet and very rewarding view of the thunderous, cascading waters. Expect to get your feet wet. It's nice that they provide sandals and a rain poncho.
The Cave of the Winds tour takes you right down next to the waterfall. It is neat to be able to stand so close and be battered by the wind and water. It gives you a great perspective on the enormity of the falls.
When you buy your tickets, you are given a plastic bag, a poncho and a pair of strap on sandals.
Parking lot in Niagara Falls State Park is the closest lot. Good for stashing your stuff in the car and returning for dry clothes.
Maid of the Mist
Board the Maid of the Mist on the American side, at Prospect Point in the Niagara Reservation State Park. Although the ride is the same from either side, the American launch of the Maid of the Mist concludes with a self-guided climb along the Crow's Nest staircase - flush to the Falls, and so close to it that, on sunny days with a light wind, the mist from the base of the Falls envelopes the staircase to create one of the most amazing sights you will ever see: a circular rainbow! Under these favorable conditions (best time: late morning to early afternoon), visitors to the Crow's Nest literally climb "over the rainbow" and ascend into the mists of the Falls!
Don't take your camera unless you already have a waterproof housing.
You'll also be issued a pair of non-slip rubber sandals. You'll be carrying your own shoes in a plastic bag, so don't bring anything heavy.
Grab a quart-zized ziplock bag at the grocery and put your wallet, passport or any other important papers inside. Same goes for any wet activities in or around the falls.
